Pinoy Migrant
To be a migrant
is to be alone
eating strange food
listening to foreign tongues
in a faraway land
To be a migrant
is to bear
the northern cold
or the desert heat
either from nature
or human streak
To be a migrant
is to be vulnerable
to prejudice and discrimination
from mild to extreme form:
from subtle patronizing
to uncovered acts of disgust
from suspicious looks
to physical attack
To be a migrant
is to be a young girl/woman
caressing an elderly white husband
telling oneself: for my family
I’d learn to love this man
To be a migrant
is to dream of home
at night and
to wake up full of angst:
did the neighbour
tell the police last night
an asian-looking woman
cleaning the house;
or caring for old Mr. Schmidt
behind your back?
To be a migrant
is to be called a hero
for sending euros, dinars, yens
and dollars every month
feeding the bellies of corrupt politicians,
who doesn’t care about my welfare
when I come back
To be a migrant
is to dream of a better world:
where food is on the table
where children get education
where the sick gets medication
To be a migrant
is to pray at night
for a better world to live in:
to be home once again
and forever…
Amen.

i can relate to this, jack. maybe the reason why i resisted all the temptations to "go abroad". got an offer to work in nebraska when i was having a journalism fellowship there but i said no. i actually didnt know the reason why i said no during that time. all i know was that i belong somewhere, not there. but i dont have any negative attitude about people leaving for foreign shores. its all about choices. this is a globalized world.
i'm sure you made the right decision. you are much more needed in the phils. than in the usa. if only i can convince my family to go back, i would be happier, i think.
the pains of assimilating jack?
that and more...
life here in D. has been nice, but then after living here for almost 8 years now, I need other challenges in life. Somehow I miss my independence, my old work as development worker, I miss some aspects of home.
There are lots of ways to feel "useful" once again without jeopardizing your current lifestyle.
You can start a charitable foundation helping poor people in the philippines either financially or otherwise. Just one of the many possibilities.
That old idea of being with the poor and living with the poor in order to help the poor is pure bullshit (excuse the language). How can one help the poor if one is poor himself? It is like: how can I save a drowning man if my boat is also sinking?
