Watching Europa Master Cup
Coming from a basketball country, I'm not a big fan of football and unlike my football-crazy German friends I never religiously watched every game in the on-going Europa Master Cup hosted by Austria and Switzerland. But the game between Turkey and Germany is something I'll never fail to watch tonight. There is so much passion involved in this game. Turkey is the underdog but the Germans who are the heavy favourite are not taking their chances. Football is a very unpredictable sport. It is a combination of skills, team work, and psychology. The Dutch team players' combination of technique and teamwork were deemed insurmountable after they humbled the Italians- the reigning world masters. Yet the Dutch were in turn brought down to their knees by the Russians whom everybody considered a "door mat" at the start of the Cup. The Dutch were not able to withstand the pressure in the penalty kick after a nerve-wracking 120 minutes game amid 30°C summer heat. Now every remaining team in the Cup fears the Russian bears whose young and unknown players demonstrated unheard of skills, grit, and determination.

Another thing that fascinates me with football is the way it is played out beyond the stadiums where they were played. The victory or defeat of a national team brings out passionate jubilation or mourning to millions and millions of their fans-- some of them- albeit the minority- do at times become violent. I don't know that is in football that elicits so much Europeans' tribal instinct of loyalty, pride and heroism. (Yes, Europeans treat their winning teams like conquering heroes.)
For the thousands of Turkish migrants living in Germany. The game tonight presents a difficult dilemma: are they going to cheer for the team of their country of origin or the team of their adopted country. Tonight my question will be answered...
P.S.: here's an excellent article about the German national football team written by an archrival.

Jack, Turks are ready for the overwinning.
Kung matalo sila handa na rin ang mga autong susunugin ha ha.
Naku, ipasok mo na ang sportscar ni Tim sa garahe, Tina! Hahaha...
"For the hundreds of thousands of Turkish migrants living in Germany. The game tonight presents a difficult dilemma: are they going to cheer for the team of their country of origin or the team of their adopted country."
oh yes it is my question too.
i like to watch this game and i am fan of Germany, but i like more to watch reaction of turkish people who live in Germany.
i've read in one news that one day in future mybe in 2030 the president of germany will be turkish!!
anyway, viva Germany
me too jack, i only watch the championship game =)
good luck on your team....
Honestly, I'd like to cheer for Turkey... they being the underdog. But of course, my wife and children would be very upset, so I'll just keep my mouth shut, hehehe...
Thanks, Sylvia! I'll be rooting for the best team tonight... meaning whoever wins, that's my team. I actually like to root for the underdog (in this case the Turkish team), but I don't like to sleep outside the kulambo tonight... My wife is a passionate fan of the German team, you see...
jack! enjoy man football... soccer sa ato.. hehehehe
but my team is Italy!!! actually diri sa Davao City high and ADDU when we were in high school kini gyud ang in... hehehehe
and its Italy for me cause i'm a Del Piero fan!!!! *buntung hininga!* LOL
So, you're a fan of Italy... our friend Francesco would be happy to know that. Even though they're already out of competition.
yeah i know.... tsk tsk tsk...
as in i have a Del Piero jersey!!! hahahahaha....
Oddly enough, Manila has a very strong futbol fan base. Cebu is only beginning to catch up.
Still not heavy on sports though, so I can only comment out of a passing interest. :) I like playing the sport more than watching it.
actually the Philippine football team was doing well before... it was only during the jaworski time that the basketball thing had the center stage... as in center stage... plus si Michael Jordan pa!!!
the National Team in football are mostly from Laguna, davao and yeah manila.... i have some friends before sa national team pero syempre tanda na kami ngayon hehehehe.. ewan if the new breed is doing well too... i hope we can develop it... it's one sport that i think we can do fairly well...
for a long time, I didn't and could not appreciate the passion my hubby had with football..as my kids grew I've slowly changed my passion from basketball to soccer..but volleyball is my forever love, hindi lang siya ka-level ng basketball and soccer sa popularity. Volleyball is one I've played when I was in school and office, pero ngayon no more strength left, heheeh..
somehow 12 years ago, when Bierhoff was then the goal hunter of the German team, I slowly began to appreciate this game..he plays clean and perfect...
then 2006 was really a highlight World championship having it held in Germany...my "dalaga" went public viewing then and it seems like a kind of euphorie has grown on in me..I just love this oneness of the masses and everyone sharing the same hope and weaknesses..:)
now that Germany, as an Italian press said "the beautiful Germany is back, exact and punctual" after winning against Portugal..taraaaaaan..the euphorie is back to my senses..
my kids would go today public viewing and we would all cross our fingers that everything would turn out well..am happy enough that they are among the best 4..Turkey's team is unbelievabe in their desire to win, kahit last 2 seconds nakukuha pa nilang mag-ka goal..so let's all sit down this evening and watch an exciting game...
of course the Turks here want Turkey to win, you know about this...
i will be rooting for spain in the other semifinals against russia. hehehe
i believe each one has loyalty to a team well known to them, from ones own country, country men of our relatives and families..
haha great minds think alike! meron din akong dinadraft na blog entry about being a basketball fan watching football. haha. coming soon!
wowowow i am a little exiting to watch this match ! i hope it will be a good match in the pure sport spirit ...this is a important match for both team ...maybe turkey is more motivated . Turkey never arrived at this point ...win this match could be a storic event for them ...germany just won the cup in the past ...anyway they are very strong .
thank you for remeber me that
( that italy is out of competition )
it is a usefull info , in the case some italian forget it , yes yes
hahahahahahaha
Also if it is a conflic of interest for me ...
congratulation for your chose !! Italy is a nice team :-p:-p:-p hihihihih
yes Del Piero is a good player and a good man too
( I like him and also his 6 Ferrari ) :-p:-p
...maybe now he is a little old but in anycase he has a big carisma on the team so he is very usefull in a sport where psicology is very important .
Yes he is.. such a sweet husband too.... LOL
well 6 Ferrari is really great too...!!! LOL
and who says he's getting old!!! he's getting sexier every year!! :p lmao!!!
it's ok francesco... now you're free to cheer for Jack's Germany! hahahahaha
Oh so you're not cheering for Germany then??? LOL
I dont have the cable connected now, jack... so who won???
It is just starting now, Sha. So got to watch it now...

The Turkish just scored, Sha!!!! 1:0 20 minutes into the game. The Germans are quite nervous...
yes ...for the moment Turkey is playing better :-p
wowow Goal for Germany
1 - 1 now
1:1 Now. The Germans scored!
yes, you're right Francesco! It is a very exciting game now... the Turkish team is really a big surprise for the Germans...
But the Germans are getting better now, Francy...
yes , absolutely turkey is a surprise !
now the match begin really .
i have my meal now but i will continue watch the match whil ei am eating ...i hope don't throttle me by myself :-)) :-))
LOL Guten Appetit... chew your pasta welll :-D
it prove as psicology can make the difference in a fotbaal match ...
motivation , wish , determination is the essence of this sport :-p
hahahah no no , no pasta this time ...maybe tomorrow :-)) :-))
have good watch !!!!!!!!!! ciao ciao
ay naman!!! kainis ala akong cable!!! huhuhuhuhu....
at Francy pala ang nickname ni francesco!!! LOL..... cute!!!
You're right here again, France! The Turkish team seems to be more motivated than the Germans... they're again seizing the initiative in the game...
you're missing a lot, Sha!!! Very thrilling this game....
BLOOOD!!! A German player was hit on the head and blood spluttered... Is he going out now???
who?? who was hit???
Simon Rolfes. He's playing the middle field of the German team. But he seems to be okey again. Now it's break so got to get my drinks...
2:1 for the Germans! Klose scored!!! Francesco where are you now???
2:2 now!!! The Turkish scored!!!! 4 minutes more to play....
What a dramatic game. The Germans won 3:2! So the Germans were able to stop the Turks, Francesco! Is this the modern-day Battle of Lepanto?
love the blow by blow! hahaha
(of all nights, ngayon ako walang tv)
oh shucks. i was rooting for the underdog. hehehe. well congratulations germany!
Yes, the winner takes it all. You should have seen the crying and faces of disappointment of the Turkish fans. Now I can hear shots and firecrackers... The Germans are now celebrating... They managed to be in the Finals!
Congrats for German team., first 20 mins., slept but pushed through to the end.,galing talaga ng match na ito Jack.,
see Dutch team dont have that much strong mental push up to the end or up to the hell.
Maybe you're right, Tina! I still believed the Dutch team is one of the best, but like what you said there's something in their psychology that is wanting... When they're pressured, they cracked.
They got for sure the best keeper in EU. Edwin van de Sar.,thats his last play with the team and perhaps few years more joining Manchester United.
He was very good, Tina!
congrats, jack! obvisously your favorite team is in the final. if spain goes to the finals, i will be on the other side of the field though. sorry, jack! hehehehe
He is,,,, reallyyy..... even though i'm an itallian fan.. LOL
yeah spain is doing well.... i saw their last game! so who dya think will be i the finals jack!!!.... Oh congratulations by the way....
And we can congratulate the Turks too.... they made it this far!
may ka chat ka pala...you know, I couldn't stand the excitement last night that I finished instead the cake I was preparing and ironed clothes and would jump with joy the moment I'd hear the goals from Germany..the triumph shout from the city where there's public viewing cld be heard to our house, 1 km away yun ah..
ang saya..we all agree that the Turks played better, but the score comes fromt he goals...swerte din kasi iba ang goal keeper ng Turkey? I would say if Khan is the goal-keeper he would have blocked the goas of Turkey :)..
what made them quite not so fluid yesterday was the fact of 6-days pause, although they trained..ganoon daw yun eh..anyways, what matters is Germany made it this time to the finals..naalala ko yung teas and sadness we all shared to World Championship after losing against the Italians in the semi finals..
Huraaaaaaaah for the heroic goal of Lahm..
yes, Nons! Philipp Lahm did very well last night... Am now watching the Russian v. Spain... I'm rooting for the Russians even if they might lose... :-)
together with the Russians the Turkish team were the surprise of the season. They played a damn well good game, Sha.
do you have now access to TV, Tatit? The Russian-Spanish game is getting hotter...
Aaah Jack,.poor Russians they dont even got time to make one goal., Spain team dominated the game.,(hu hu hu.)
They are really good conquerors ever since (lol).,Ayos ito sa championship. Spain vs Germany.
aaaaagggghhhh! jack stop!!! tama na.. LOL
sige na nga, inform na alng us who won... during the last Spain game I won a bottle of red wine! hahahahaha
Hola, ahay, excited na ako for Sunday..but tell you I'm quite worried at ang galing ni "Casillas" the goalkeeper of Spain, mas magaling siya kay Lehman ng Germany..I hope Germany would do a lot lot better on Sunday...ahaaaaaaay...
:-)) :-)) i was in front of tv :-p
mmmm no , in real there is no correlation with Lepanto ...but as simbolic meaning could be also because football is not a simple sport in europe :-p:-p someone say it is only a sport , well maybe it should be but in real it is not :-)) this such kind of event have a special power and carisma and it is also the only sport where premiers go to watch officially ...althout i heard that the coach of germany will be the next coach of turkey ...it make me think that fortunatelly the dark era of lepando is ended forever :-p:-p
what say about Spain vc Russia . Spain merit the victory at all .
spain dominated the match without doubts and they show us a wonderful football , a fine tecnic , a great play ....mmm the final will be hard for germany !! the only chance of germany is play at 100 per cent ....also this time germany will play with a more motivated team as spain won nothing of important until now while Germany played a lot of finals and also won some of them .
but ...are we sure spain will play at the same level also in the next match ?? we know how a team can change face in this euro cup :-p ...I think the less emotive team will win ! it's a final and mind and heart can make bad joke !
....in this moment spain tecnic is superior to germans
also they spanish players are youngers than german and maybe it make them resist more to a furious play .
but if the young age is a point for spanish , german are more strongs ( about body ) infact spanish are minute comparate germans and also ....if in a side the young age of spanish could help them , in another side it could make them nervous ( it is the euro final ) while the international experience of germans player could help them to resist to the psicologic pressure !
this time I'll gonna cheer for the Germans, Tina! I wanna make my Frau happy... hehehe
what do you mean? You want to bet a bottle or Red against me? Okey, deal...
It seems your prayers worked the last time, Nons! So why not ask again your priest-friends for another favour hahaha...
Yes, football is full of symbolism. I was really impressed how many Turkish here showed their double allegiance to Germany and Turkey. You can see both German and Turkish flags fluttering on their cars and hanging on their houses... Isn't it nice?
It is interesting that you pointed this out-- I mean that big bodies mean advantage. Scolari (the Portuguese trainer) pointed that out before the Porto-German match. He said in an interview that his players are very good alright but the Germans are just bigger. But you know look at the Dutch and the Russians... the latter were towering yet we knew the result.
yes, the German team has plenty of international exposure but I believe the Spaniards have more incentives to fight hard and win this game. In the same way that this team made football history by defeating the mighty Italians, they're out to defeat the Germans and win the Cup. If that happens... victory is sweet, Francesco!
I hope it will become more popular, Jan. I really believe our physical built and reknown agility is more fitted to football than basketball...
If you go by the stereotype of how the Turkish "behave" in Germany, you're right. But I also knew of Turkish people here who are proud of both their country of origin and their adopted country. I saw a lot of houses here displaying both the German and Turkish flags, for instance.
wala na sila..ako na lang..mataimtim talaga..
tutulongan kita... bwahahaha....
yes absolutely , nothing as footbal can make europeans crazy :-)):-))...there is the stereotipe about brasilian go crazy for fotball ...well it is not a stereotipe it is true but also italian ,spanish , frachmen ,portughese.... and what about germans ? they should be the cold germans ...the nordic germanic look more crazy than brasilians jumping with german flag when germany win matches....and russian look crazy too ...what about the big disappoin for the english...there were angry for the exclusion from the competition ...
yes I think it happen expecially for those who live in german long time ...and what about who has a german parent and the other one turk ...or also about those turks born in germany direct from two turkish parents and find their identity only in the german culture because it is the only one they know ....actually is long time there are turskish in germany .I think there are also turkish who will cheer for germany only .
and ...if with a miracle philipine will win the world cup it could be the bigger Spot pro philiphines of ever in europe ! :-p:-p:-p
take your seat now before your TV set, Francesco. The play is going to begin in 5 minutes . Gasp, they have an Italian referee, that's a bad omen for the Germans :-((
Oh yes you're right , that is a italian referee ..OMG the italian nightmare continue ....brbrbr GOD HELP You !! :-)):-))
unfair! The Spaniard just committed a foul against Podolski, but the Italian ref didn't give a yellow card :-(
First corner ball for the Germans!!! Good luck....
i have to wake up at 3 am just to watch this final. hehehe
don't worry , it is only because brother referee get marryed a spanish wife :-p:-p and because he has a spanish niece :-p:-p:-p
God Help Germany ! OMG ! :-p:-p
welcome, Greg! It is a very exciting game, it is worthwhile waking up early in the morning :-)))
Gawd, Francesco! The ref is really biased against the Conquistadores...
Huhuhu... Torres sccorredd!!!!!
Now the German adrenalin mus work harder! Francesco, Is Papa Ratzi watching this???
ohi ohi ... it's a hard moment for germany !!
hahahaha well i don't know , but if he is watching it will be not good for his heart :-p:.-p:-p
He should ask intervention from the Madonna... worse for the germans Ballack is injured... his eye is bleeding... Mama Mia!!! Caramba....
Gawd, Ballack is still paying despite bleeding eyebrow... I haven't seen a gootball game as dramatic as this one!!!
free kick for the Germans!! yehey....
Ballack in again :-p
Yes, but did you see his bleeding face???
and now the ref gave Ballack a yellow card... Caramba!!!
yes , but Ballack is not a guy you can put away in this final ...i could be able toplay also without a leg i think so :-p:-p:-p
you need police for block him to join in the field in anyway :-p:-p:-p
If only this Italian ref would be fair! Is he from Sicily?
yes but he gave a yellow card to the spanish player too :-p:-p
Okey, I saw that, too, later...
hahaha great first half....sorrr, jack. spain has 1 goal.
welll i don't know from where italian region he came , but i know he is a good boy , but unfortunately in his free time he habit burn germany flags :-p:-p:-p :-)):-))
well, the Germans performed better than usual but the Spaniards are pretty hard to crack... hmmm... the first half is over got to go to get the laundry :-)
Good luck Germany !!
1 goal ...mmm situation is not so drammatic , Germany can win still ....
bye bye i go off , i will continue to see the match !!
this is a very good final , both team are great :-p
Jack..di ko matingnan ang game, eto nag Multiply na lang..1:0 na..may mga mali pala ang referee..of course an Italian have light feelings with Spaniards...let's hope that Germans wouls goal soon...
yes, Greg, I'm bleeding now, too, you see. I'm not a great fan of the German team but pray help me I don't want those pretty-faced Spaniards winning the game...
light more candles, Nons! Baka makatulong :-)))
Go, but do keep in touch... it is such a pleasure chatting with you in this match of all matches, Francesco mio! Did I hear it right just now? Philipp Lahm is getting out of the game! He is also injured!!!! Mama mia... hilfe!
ano bang nangyayari talaga..if that's the case, naloko na..it's half the game...
in a way, being in the 2nd place, if ever, is already a milestone gyud..
Well, Nons, the Conquistadores are really good but it doesn't help that the Ref (an Italian!) seems to be favouring them. The Spanish players committed fouls which he just ignored...
tsk, tsk...
Arno, my husband said, as I was complaining that Philip Lahm is out, that he's not the only one who can play soccer..:)
... and now Klose is also injured...
yes, but the German team needs him badly....
yun na nga eh...ohhh...
The Conquistadores seem to be getting stronger by the second, Nons...
ayyyy...sinasabi ko na nga ba eh..
tingin ka na, Nons, napakaexciting...
oo nga tigil na muna ako dito...
THE SPANIARDS WON!!!!! 0:1. They played a brilliant game but the ref was unfair....
sorry, jack, for the germans. it's not their day. i will sleep again now. working in a few hours. hehehe
Oh, what a disappointment, Greg! The winner takes it all they say, and I see now how the Germans are mourning. Maybe it is good for their ego, though...
Not the year for German team Jack.,
better luck next time.
huhuhuhu... Tina! Pass the red wine now, I need a drink...
to subcide the blood pressure?
hehehe... was Tim also watching?
Yep, yun pa kahit dapat gumising ng maaga for his flight bukas,. eh ako din mtulog na ako,. aga kami bukas., hatid ko pa sya.
Good night n enjoy drnking your red wine.
Good night, Tina! Tawag ka sa akin bukas, ha?
So that was all for tonight, folks. The Germans lost the game against the Spaniards 0:1. The Spaniards deserve to be the European Masters, they were brilliant, disciplined, and fast. They were lucky, too. At least one of their players (Silva) deserved a red card when he butted on the head the German player Podolski while on a heated altercation on the playing field. Tough luck for the Germans, the Italian referee didn't see it :-(
do you think that the italian referee didn't do a good job , or was he good ?
Anyway i see continue the German tradition to join in a final and lost it :-p:-p:-p
about that goal of Torres , it was because a error of german defensor who understimate the situation .
Torres was very fast , in a 5 metre of run he got a meter to the german denfender , then kick the ball at last second ....and maybe this event changed the psicology of the match !
sincere i was cheer for germany but i also know that if there is a team who merit to win this cup it is espana .
I agree with you, Francesco, the Spanish team was more skilled, more coordinated, and more focused than their towering German counterpart... (And for the women, may I add, they're more handsome , too :-))
yes, Philipp Lahm made a mistake. But he was injured earlier...
anti-climactic as always :-D
Lols..., only Torres !!
I think he missed to give a red card to Silva after he butted Podolski's head! I think this incident unnerved Podolski to no end and had probably contributed to his less sterling performance afterwards.
I hope Tim will not read this post of yours, Tina! LOL
Hes dead tired for six hours waiting of his flight.,machine kaput.
poor tim.
Okey, you can adore Fernando Torres here... hehehe. But, Tina he's only 19 years old!
Yeeeh with his long legs.,(no doubt)
Nagpafantasia na si Tina! LOLS
Aah grabe ka naman Jack, (alam mo naman i love my nephews Lols).
LOL what I mean is, he's still very young you'll see him again in action in 2010 World Cup :-)
Lets see in 2 years time in South Africa,. 21 na si Torres, perhaps few centimeter more, (his height).
Hey wheres Francesco?
We will be in Italy next week., camping along Garda Lake.
Hows the weather forecast there?
Aha, at talagang Spanish fan ka na! Akala ko ba HUP HOLLANDIA cheer leader ka, Tina!
hahahahaha....
really really fun reading fans talk after teh games!!!
hahahahaha....
it was a real nice game jack!!! really really nice, i saw it on delayed telecast hahahaha....
Nagsalawahan na ako Jack.,Lols. I like van de Sar., Kuyt even he got short legs ha ha.
