It's mourning time for German football fans

The party of the mighty German national football team seems to be over. Tonight the Czechs humiliated them with a triumphant 0:3 in Munich's gleaming Allianz Stadium. The German team already qualified for the European Footballl Cup when it tied with Ireland- 0:0-  in last Saturday's game. Now it's the Czechs turn to qualify for the much coveted Cup to be held in Switzerland and Austria next summer.

Although playing in front of a home audience, the German team didn't even score a single goal. They played so badly and so uncoordinated that the underrated Czechs managed already  to shoot 2 goals during the first half of the game. On the second half, the fans hoped that their team would recover it's bearing and shoot at least one face-saving goal. But fat chance, the now demoralized Germans couldn't anymore hold their ground against the fanstastically-coordinated Bohemian onslaught. The highly-energized Czechs scored again.

It's certainly a wake-up call for the highly-paid, highly regarded German 11 (and their coach, of course) as they are fondly called by their adoring fans- which include no less than Frau Angela Merkel, the country's first woman Chancellor.

Tomorrow, German newspapers and TV pundits will have a heyday analyzing the game. Some of them, for sure, will call for heads to roll. German pride- if not manliness- is no less at stake here.

Meanwhile the German women football team (less paid, and less honored than their male counterpart) still basks in glory as the reigning FIFA World Cup title holder, for the second time in a row. They defeated their challenger Brazil 2:0 in Beijing last month. Hep-hep hurray! Hep-hep Hurray!

Jack, you are really becoming a german... :)

it seems in football, per capita GDP is not a factor in winning... it has totally democratized. basketball will also go the same route ..

Tsk. A superpower down -- trend in sports nowadays. But when can Filipinos put up a World Cup-worthy team? Seriously.

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

yez, they could really kick it like Beckham, Tyler, maybe even better!

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

my dear bong, I'd been watching soccer- and have kicked the ball myself before- since my Marawi days. So stop teasing me becoming a German. Zum Wohl!

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

you hit the pot there, dave. The sensation last year's world cup here were not the usual suspects but the small African countries like what- Tógo? But of course, football's strings are still being mainly pulled somewhere between the Rhine river and the Alpine mountains.

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

yes, I'd been wondering about that since years, too, swerver. Our physique would do better in soccer than in basketball. Plus we're agile, plus we're in-born team players, plusplusplus...

David Llorito hat gesagt…

team players? i dont think pinoys are team players. we seem to excel in individual games like boxing, shooting, billiards, mixed martial arts. but im not really sure...

David Llorito hat gesagt…

ah, they may pull all the strings they want, but for as long as anybody has the chance to win fair and square its fine with me. haha!

& sipa (sport rin yun diba?)

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

he..he.. dave, did I mistake our bayanihan spirit as sign that we also can play well in a team? You make me insecure now...

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

of course, sipa takraw is a sport played not only in the Phils. but in neighboring Malaysia and Indonesia as well. It is also definitely a team sport.

swerver swerver hat gesagt…

i think he has a point. we indeed excel mostly in individual and more specialized sports or games if you include bowling and billiards.

David Llorito hat gesagt…

i dont know really... honest.

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

okey, is that the reason why soccer never got off the ground back home? Martin who plays football was a little bit disappointed not to see a single soccer field when we went home last august.

swerver swerver hat gesagt…

we have more basketball courts than barangay halls in the country.. but i think we have more cockfight arenas than soccer fields... really bad... soccer is more popular in the West Visayas area... in Bacolod and Ilo-ilo.

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

yes, I remember that my Ilongo friends from So. Cotabato excelled in soccer when we were still college. Soccer was also the sport of choice of my de Molay bros in MSU before so I kicked the ball with them from time to time. Paextra, extra goalie lang before because I'm not really the sportler type- now I have to learn the game to be able to bond with my growing son.

David Llorito hat gesagt…

yeah, the ilonggos are good at it. remember alex casiple? he is good.

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

And Wawols, too! Btw, got any idea where he is now?

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

and how about you? You're also a G.I. LOL

Greg G. jr hat gesagt…

oh....i guess it's not going to happen in our time. at this moment, majority of the population is more concerned about surviving. who cares about chasing and kicking a ball in a huge field? this is the only sport where almost the whole world is crazy about, yet not popular among filipinos.

David Llorito hat gesagt…

alex is now with the corporate world doing IT stuff. different guy he is now.

David Llorito hat gesagt…

im not good at it. im an absentee ilonggo. lol!

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

I know where Alex is now. I met him and his family in Davao last July but I asked you about Wawa Castillon. He's a kababayan of yours, too, right?

David Llorito hat gesagt…

wawa?! yes, i remember. eons ago, i heard he was teaching in local high school in lake cebu but im not sure about this info. havent heard about him since then.

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

come, Greg, many African countries are poorer than us. But they're beginning to show promise in the game.

Nona Enriquez-Schanowski hat gesagt…

Jack, I've watched the game, and can't believe the mistake they were doing, as if they don't know who'll kick first..
It's really a pity that the main players were all injured, I believe that's one reason. Iba talagang pag first priorities ang nasa field..

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

I know what you mean, Nona! So, Ballack was injured? I saw him just sitting on the bench.

Nona Enriquez-Schanowski hat gesagt…

He is still recuperating..ewan ko sa kanila, that's what they say..ang tagal na rin na hindi naglalaro si Ballack..

Schneider once said that he's luck to have this genes which seem not to get injury, pero, he is one of those recuperating, like Miro Klose, Lahm..si Lehman naman, got 2 yellow cards..
sayang talaga, I hope they'd recover well from that..:)

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…

I had a seminar last weekend so I wasn't able to watch the game between Ireland and Germany. So, I only heard that Lehmann got 2 yellow cards, but for what?

swerver swerver hat gesagt…

hear that! yes, so many miracles are written in sports pages everyday. we poor pinoys can hope for some xerox there. the economic and political sides are still too far-fetch from a sunshine. but also got to give hope there still.. what, miracle? right?

Greg G. jr hat gesagt…

oh yeah...you're right. a couple or more african countries qualified for world cup. but they are able to make it because it's a popular sport there. i am just wondering why it has never been popular in pinas.

Nona Enriquez-Schanowski hat gesagt…

yung game was hot..so all defense, active sila, pati si Lehmann over protective, he went out so far to get the ball, that wasn't his job anymore...this I saw, but the first one, I didn't, baka similar situation..

Francesco Mi hat gesagt…

which national team will win Euro 2008 ? ? :-p:-p

Jack Catarata hat gesagt…
